By now, the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is going into its first week. It will run until September 2nd, 2013. Apart from the weird food, adventurous rides and other things in between, the focus of the CNE – is technology-wise.

For years, the fair offers a way on how to keep their patrons connected throughout the grounds – whether through means of social media channels, to the official website at www.theex.com or through their smartphone app (for iPhones and Android devices. Other devices such as BlackBerry, Windows Phone, etc. can access the mobile-optimized website of theex.com).

I was reading a case study that Allstream had prepared last year and it basically describes some of the challenges that the Exhibition Place has overcome when overhauling their technology equipment (from Wi-Fi access points, to VOIP equipment, etc.) to meet the growing needs for the customers who attended Exhibition Place (whether it’s for the CNE, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, etc.). You can read the case study here.

While i’m pleased that the CNE is pleased to provide to offer Free WiFi throughout the Exhibition Place grounds, many people began to wonder how fast is the WiFi down at the Exhibition Place grounds. That’s why I decided to perform a survey of the speeds using the Speedtest app for my iPhone that I had measured during my visit to the CNE last weekend (during the opening weekend).

Here are the speed test results that I had gathered when I connect my iPhone using the SSID (Service Set Identifier) of “CNE2013″ (or CNE):

Food building: 7 ms ping, 29.8 6Mbps download/5.07 Mbps upload

Direct Energy Centre (concourse): 6 ms ping, 28.97 Mbps download/1.25 Mbps upload

Exhibition GO Station: 7 ms ping, 26.97 Mbps download/1.80 Mbps upload

Direct Energy Centre – Hall A: 15 ms ping, 18.42 Mbps download/18.94 Mbps upload (unconfirmed)

While these speed results are not exactly you could expect while visiting the CNE, your mileage (results) may vary. In the age of technology, we must be able to keep up with it. While the majority of people are now using smartphones nowadays, keeping connected is just a simple tap away.
